Phoebe plays on from Junior Sports Star Award

History may well show 2015 as a watershed year in the sporting life of MWAS Scholarship holder Phoebe Vlahov. Phoebe has just been named in the WA Cricket Association (WACA) 13-player squad for next month’s Under-18 Female National Championships in Canberra. This selection closely follows Phoebe being selected as the Mid West Junior Sports Star of the Year.

Phoebe is one of five regional athletes to make the final selection and the 38% proportion shows that regional athletes are still making their mark in state teams.  Orazio Santalucia who will coach WA in the tournament, which runs from 13-19 January, noted that "This squad has worked well since the end of August and has developed pleasingly over this time. The squad will work well together and I look forward to some competitive cricket from this group who will provide a good challenge for everyone who plays us. I see definite future Fury and Scorchers players in this squad and I look forward to this step in their development pathway.”

Phoebe has been an active member of the MWAS and made good use of the services available to help her progress. WACA Regional Cricket Manager Jack Little said it was great the WACA was investing in athletes with consistently good performances locally. “This is a great reward for perseverance and balancing a very busy last year of school with sport. It is a credit to Phoebe”, said Little.

WA’s first game at the carnival is on Wednesday 13 January against hosts ACT/NSW Country from 10am local time.
