Fun with Snacks and Building Towers
June saw some fun and interesting workshops for the MWAS athletes. The athletes were treated to a hands on demonstration of how to prepare nutritious and tasty snacks. Given these athletes travel regularly to Perth and are often between training sessions the knowledge gained will serve them well in the future. Sports Dietitian Catherine Dumont prepared some snacks and gave the athletes a chance to mix smoothies and flavour popcorn with spices like paprika, not something they had experienced before!
The winners - Lexie Stoner and Emma Burke
The most senior MWAS athletes completed the Advanced Elective modules of the Developing Champions program in June. One of the activities involved building a tower using marshmallows and spaghetti and shown here are the winners of the challenge, Lexie Stoner and Emma Burke. This activity challenged the communication skills of the athletes and these girls came out on top.
The workshop was facilitated by Joe McCarthy who came up from Perth and local girl Eliesha Browne was the elite athlete co-presenter. Eliesha was able to share her insights gained from several years as part of the WAIS Water Polo program and the challenges faced in moving to Perth to achieve her goal of making the national team. Having a local athlete who has shared the same journey the MWAS athletes are on now was of considerable value for the scholarship holders.
MWAS thanks Eliesha and Joe and the WAIS as well as the Department of Sport and Recreation for making the workshop possible.
